CBT - Compulsory Basic Training

Your starting point to a life of motorcycle riding.

Before you can legally ride on the road you must complete a CBT to accompany your provisional license.

About the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

The CBT course or Compulsory Basic Training course is a one day basic course in motorcycling.

There is no test at the end of the day, no written, no verbal, just fun fun fun! So there is no need to worry about not passing although very occasionally it may be necessary for a pupil to carry out a further lesson with us to fully ensure their safety and confidence on the road.

What to bring:

  1. A current license with your provisional entitlement (for old style licenses you will need a passport or proof of ID). Cat P for 16-17 years old for a moped, Cat A for 17 years old and above for a 125cc motorcycle.
  2. Make sure you bring both parts (its on the paper part, left hand side - click here to see an example.) and remember, no license no training
  3. Suitable clothing: Jacket and jeans - Flip flots and shorts
Gloves and helmets if you have them. Please note that no tinted visors are allowed.
  4. Something to eat (it's a long day!)
  5. Most importantly, a good sense of humour!

What is involved?

The course covers 5 elements:

  1. An introduction to the CBT, plus information regarding clothing and equipment
  2. An explanation of the motorcycle and its controls
  3. Teaching and using skills to carry out set exercises
  4. Discussion on road awareness, safety and use
  5. On road lesson, a 2 hour ride with instruction via a 1 way radio.

We will finish off with a de-brief and issuing a DL196 (CBT certificate) which validates the relevant provisional entitlement on your driving license.

The costs:

£125 for the day. This includes everything you need (Bike hire, petrol, insurance etc.) except suitable clothing (Helmets can be bought from our show room or rented for £5 a day).

CBT courses for returning customers who wish to refresh their previous CBT certificate are subject to a £15 discount off the price of an ordinary CBT

Once you complete the CBT

Once completed your CBT lasts 2 years at which point to continue your entitlement to ride on the road you will need to renew your cbt, unless you pass both your motorcycle theory and practical test during this time period.

A current CBT is a requisite before you can take your practical motorcycle test.
